Working the Worky Work

Since launching the new Ginger website in early January 2011, I’ve been far too busy to get around writing a new blog post. I suppose this is a good, no…great thing. I was chatting with Craig about what I should make this blog post about and he comes back with, “It’s obvious, you’ve been busy, so write about that!” Seemed like a no brainer, so here it is. January 2011 in a nutshell.
The year started off with a bang with the new site. I poured my heart and soul into creating something new and exciting. It went over really well, I’ve got a lot of great feedback on the site. Our site traffic is way up and so is our uptake. Within days of launching the site, I was busy preparing estimates for lots of folks on a variety of projects. This filled me with a renewed drive to make Ginger something great. To break out of the freelance designer routine I had started falling into and trudge along the path to forging my dream, an exciting and dynamic creative studio. It’s exciting to embrace that entrepreneurial spirit and leap out of your comfort zone into uncharted waters.
Here is a breakdown of the our design projects this month:
- Picaroons Mystery Projects: We’ve been hard at work on two projects for Picaroons which, for now, remain under wraps. I am looking forward to the day these come to light, but as you may have guessed, today is not the day. I will just say that these projects have seen me reaching far into the depths of my creativity and come up with some cool new things that surprised even me.
- AIDS NB Red Tie Affair: We’ve been working away on a sponsorship package for AIDS NB’s annual fundraiser. This one is pretty cool. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should head on over to www.redtireaffair.ca and check out the webpage we made for the event. We’ve also put together posters, ads, an email campaign and much much more. We hope to see you out at the event. We’ve got a lot of great new sponsors coming on board and we are having a lead up event at the Garrison Ale House on the 5th. Hope to see you there.
- Cedar Tree Signage: Lisa Wilby from Cedar Tree Cafe asked me to design a nice sign for them to tell the world that they offer all day breakfast. This was a fun project. The atmosphere and staff of the Cedar Tree are lively and fun, so reflecting that in their signage was just more of the same. PS. Their breakfast really is great, any time of day. ALSO, I’ve always claimed that Cedar has the best Falafel Sandwiches east of Quebec. Just saying.
- Thoughtful Dwellings Logo: Garth approached me about designing a logo for his new consultancy, Thoughtful Dwellings. It’s an exciting new project with a focus on eco-friendly homebuilding, renewable energy and energy efficiency. As of this post, we are on the last iteration of the logo. Garth is very pleased with his new identity.
- NB Crafts Council: Bree, from the NB Crafts Council, requested my help with a few projects for them A postcard and a series of bookmarks featuring 6 of their crafty members. I love working within the Arts community in Fredericton, as art is so inherently conducive to creativity. Also, Bree is one of the funnest and liveliest people in town…true story.
- Saint John Liver Foundation: I had the pleasure of meeting Kristen, from the SJ Liver Foundation this summer at one of their events in SJ. They did an amazing job putting the event together and it was obvious to me that these were folks I was interested in working with, so I went up to the organizer, held out my card and said exactly that. I was glad when she contacted me months later. This month we worked together on a poster for their “March for Liver” event. It is going to be at Rockwood Park, March 13th, 2011. 1pm – 5pm. Bring/rent some snowshoes, cross country skis or nordic poles and having some fun for a good cause!
- Garrison District Ale House Menu: One of the funnest projects to date, hands down. I was very excited when Doug sat down in my office and asked me to design their new menus. The Garrison needs no introduction. In the short few years since they’ve opened, they have established themselves as the place to go. The next day I grabbed my camera and headed for the Garrison in search of inspiration. As soon as I walked in, I knew what I had to do. This one was all about colour. Warm, inviting colour to complement the rich wood textures adorning the interior of the Garrison. Perfect mix of colours mixed with the perfect gothic typefaces. <If you are looking for a the clue, here it is: “GIMME!”.>
- XL Plating: Craig and I have been busy working away on a complete branding package for Fredericton’s newest industrial, XL Plating. They are a new hard chroming outfit in town. So far we’ve got their logo, stationary and website designed. We are now just piecing together some excellent web copy for them and the site will be ready to launch.
This is just a taste of what we’ve been working on. Thanks for taking the time to read through all of this. Please take a minute to give us a shout and tell us how you think we are doing.
Cheers!
Andrew
